About Us
Plato, the philosopher, famously wrote “necessity is the mother of invention”. Street Chaplains was created in 2000 because of an immense need to reach a generation of young of people that no longer gathered in pews and churches, but dance floors and clubs.
As Christians from the local churches, we are motivated by a love for Christ and a desire to share His love and message to others. We care about people, physically as well as spiritually, and so our work takes many forms. Essentially, we exist to CARE: |
Chat
|
We care by chatting to people on the streets of Dundee.
Many are at their highest point in life and just want to share their joy with us. Many others are at their lowest point in life and just want someone to share their burdens with. Either way, we’re here to listen and talk. |
Assist
|
We care by assisting vulnerable people who need help on a night out.
Street Chaplains are trained and equipped to deal with typical incidents and provide basic supplies. We give out water, flipflops, alarms, ponchos, advice, and a helping hand. |
Reassure
|
We care by reassuring those who socialise and work in the night scene.
Not everyone wants to chat or needs our assistance, but we believe that the visible presence of Street Chaplains has a positive influence on the streets’ dynamics and makes people feel safer. |
Encourage
|
We care by encouraging people in their life.
We encourage people to be safe and to enjoy life. Ultimately, we encourage people to ask what life is all about, to explore faith, and to trust in God. |

Over the past 20 years, R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out to make Christ Known) Street Chaplains has become an integral part of Dundee and its night time economy. We work closely with the Police, Safe Zone Bus, bouncers and a number of other key agencies in the city centre to ensure clubbers, workers and beggars are looked after at night time.
Our ministry has expanded over the years into local nightclubs (Club Chaplains) and festivals (Festival Chaplains) as well into other towns including, Broughty Ferry and Montrose. In 2015, Street Chaplains were set up in Northern Ireland; Lurgan in Co Armagh, followed by Newcastle in Co Down, with other nearby towns in the pipeline.
Each chaplaincy team is comprised of a dedicated group of volunteers from the local churches and co-ordinated by the founder of ROCK Street Chaplains, Andrew Burns BEM.

As our ministry continues to grow and change, we are always looking for more volunteers! If you’re interested or would like more info on what being a street chaplain involves, then please get in touch.
